Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy has found a niche playing slovenly yet oddly likable protagonists, and she’ll be taking viewers on a ride with her wildest creation yet this July when she unveils Tammy, a road trip comedy which McCarthy co-wrote with her director and off-screen husband Ben Falcone. Now, Warner Bros. has revealed a trio of posters which find McCarthy’s character declaring her independence in a number of strange, albeit funny ways.
In the posters, Tammy guns her junky car, hangs on for dear life on a jet-ski and throws her hands in the air outside the Toppy Jack’s fast-food joint she just stuck up. The taglines for the poster are a little odd, to say the least, but the images themselves are somewhat entertaining to look at. However, we’ll have to wait until the film hits theaters to see whether “Coming in hot!,” “Look out fish!” and “She hit the road. The road hit back.” actually have any relevance to the story.
In the film, Tammy is fired from her job at a fast food restaurant, only to return home to find that her husband has been unfaithful. Deciding that she needs a change in her life, Tammy hits the road with her wild Grandma Pearl (Susan Sarandon), both an alcoholic and a diabetic. As Pearl quickly turns out to be more in need to help than her granddaughter, Tammy finds herself along for a series of increasingly ridiculous misadventures.
Sarah Baker, Sandra Oh, Alison Janney, Toni Collette, Dan Aykroyd, Kathy Bates, Ben Falcone, Gary Cole, Mark Duplass, Mia Rose Frampton, Nat Faxon and Mark L. Young co-star in Tammy. The film hasn’t received much buzz heading into the summer, and to be honest, I actually had forgotten it was opening so soon. Hopefully, McCarthy’s fanbase will support her in this latest big-screen venture.
The R-rated comedy opens in theaters July 2nd.
