Michelle Williams has joined the cast of Sam Raimi‘s Oz: The Great and Powerful. Williams will play Glinda, the Good Witch, who helps James Franco‘s character as they battle for control of Oz against the Evil Witches. Variety broke the news today and now with the main cast set, it looks like we’re going to be in for quite a treat. James Franco and Michelle Williams vs. Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz? Sounds good to me!
If you remember, we reported a few weeks back that Michelle Williams was up against Hilary Swank for the role. Disney wanted Williams while Raimi wanted Swank. Guess the studio won. Not that it matters though, Williams is a great actress. She gave fantastic performances recently in Blue Valentine and Meek’s Cutoff and I’m happy to see her joining the cast. Check out the plot summary below.
James Franco portrays a fast-talking snake oil salesman and illusionist who flees a traveling circus and winds up whisked away in a hot air balloon by a tornado to Oz where he must face off against real magic and the sisters battling for control of the land. Theadora (Kunis) starts out as a good witch, alongside her beautiful sister Glinda (Williams), but after her sexual advances are jilted by Franco’s salesman, she’s convinced by Evanora (Weisz) to switch sides and help her older sister rule Oz.
