Did you know that the Wachowski siblings have not made an original film since the end of The Matrix trilogy? Both Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer were adaptations, which makes it more than a decade since we had an original Wachowski product at the movies. That makes this summer’s Jupiter Ascending at least moderately exciting for fans of the operatic sci-fi that those crazy siblings are so good at.
Jupiter Ascending tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), an apparently normal woman who turns out to be – wait for it – the queen of Earth. It appears that Jupiter’s genetic signature designates her as the heir to this planet we call home – a fact which puts her in mortal danger. Earth’s current ruler, Balem (Eddie Redmayne) is not at all pleased by Jupiter’s existence, so the Queen must be protected until her ascension by Caine (Channing Tatum). An intriguing premise, to be sure, and one which is quite in keeping with the Wachowskis’ typical themes of Christ figures and rebellion against autocratic societies.
The latest international trailer for Jupiter Ascending makes the film look quite spectacular, if just a touch predictable. There’s Eddie Redmayne posturing like a space Nazi, Kunis looking luminous and very queen-like, and Channing Tatum with some gorgeous make-up. Despite some great special effects, the similarity between this and The Matrix is just a bit too close for comfort. One wonders if the Wachowskis recognize that there’s more to sci-fi than thinly veiled Christ figures.
All in all, the trailer makes Jupiter Ascending look like the space opera the Wachowskis claim it to be. Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends on your perspective and your preferences. Suffice it to say that the film will at least be visually spectacular.
Jupiter Ascending will come to theatres on July 18. You can watch the latest trailer below.
