Buoyed by the runaway success of Rogue Nation – at $700 million, it’s the most successful entry in the Mission: Impossible series to date – it looks like Christoper McQuarrie is staging something of a family reunion with the as-yet-untitled sixth installment in Paramount’s global phenomenon.
Mission: Impossible 6 is currently lensing in Paris and various parts of Europe, and after spotlighting the dashing Henry Cavill – mustache and all – McQuarrie has taken to Instagram to reveal a familiar face: Michelle Monaghan. Barring a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo appearance at the tail-end of Ghost Protocol in 2011, Monaghan’s Julia Meade – the ex-wife and fearless ally to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt – hasn’t played a major role in the Mission: Impossible saga since the third film in 2006, which was directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens).
Now, more than a decade later, Michelle Monaghan is ready to stage her comeback. Details of her role in Mission: Impossible 6 are being kept under lock and key – stored away in a vault that even Ethan Hunt would have trouble cracking – so it’s impossible (!) to gauge the amount of screentime that will be allocated to her Julia Meade at this early stage. Even still, news of Monaghan’s casting is exciting in and of itself, and it seems to be all part of McQuarrie’s plan to deliver a more personal, heartfelt chapter in the Ethan Hunt saga.

Paramount’s as-yet-untitled Mission: Impossible 6 has been penciled in for release on July 27th, 2018, and will star Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Alec Baldwin and, crucially, not Jeremy Renner, who has seemingly parted ways with the M:I franchise to double down on his commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That stint will continue through the release of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.
