Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is both a prequel to A New Hope and a sequel of sorts to Revenge of the Sith. It will feature a character from The Clone Wars and reveals how the Rebels got their hands on the Death Star plans, so you can see how director Gareth Edwards is clearly walking a fine line between both building on what’s come before and what’s yet to happen.
While Darth Vader is set to make his presence felt in a big way, another familiar face returning is Mon Mothma. A senator in the prequels and the leader of the Rebel Alliance in Return of the Jedi, her screentime so far amounts to just a few minutes, but it sounds like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will further flesh out her story.
Mothma is the one who seemingly sends Jyn Erso off to retrieve those plans, and in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the character is going to have a “significantly larger” role in this movie.
“We actually see quite a bit of her. The Rebel alliance is in disarray. Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do.”
After being left on the cutting room floor in Revenge of the Sith, it will be good to see more of Mothma as we learn about her role in the Rebel Alliance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, don’t you think? Of course, she won’t be the only familiar face showing up here, as rumours point to Han Solo also making his presence felt in some way as well.
