Arise, Jane Foster, rightful wielder of Mjölnir?
That’s something which has already occurred in Marvel Comics, but what are the chances that we see Chris Hemsworth’s beloved hero give way to Miss. Foster on the big screen? Fairly slim, or so we thought. As it turns out though, that’s actually exactly what’s going to happen in Thor 4.
Announced at Comic-Con earlier tonight, Thor: Love and Thunder will be the fourth installment in the series and, get this, it’ll see Natalie Portman return to the MCU as Jane Foster and become the female Thor. We kid you not.
For those who don’t know, a few years back, Marvel Comics bucked tradition by unveiling Jane to be the new Thor in the source material, as she wielded the mighty Mjölnir in her quest to protect the Nine Realms. Now, it appears that the studio is heading down the same route with Thor 4, which will be with us on November 5th, 2021.
Taika Waititi will be back behind the camera for the film and apparently, the pic will be based on Jason Aron’s The Mighty Thor comic. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will return as well and speaking about the new direction for the franchise, Waititi said:
“That storyline [by Jason] is incredible is full emotion, love and thunder and introduces for the first time female Thor.”
With Marvel’s panel still underway at Comic-Con, we should be getting more details on Thor: Love and Thunder as the night goes on, but it’s fair to say that this is going to be yet another wildly unique and exciting outing for a sub-franchise that was once one of the worst in the MCU. Whether it’ll be able to live up to Ragnarok or not remains to be seen, but with the same creative team returning and the addition of a female Thor, you can bet that this will be among Phase 4’s hottest films, and understandably so.
