Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead was a big hit for Netflix, dominating social media with its high-octane zombie action, science-fiction elements, and buckets of blood. Many felt that the film ended with a bunch of unanswered questions, namely: what were the zombies’ origins, why are some of them cyborgs, and what’s with the hints that our heroes might be stuck inside some kind of time loop?
Well, we may get some answers soon as two follow-up projects are in the pipeline. One is anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and the other is prequel movie Army of Thieves.
Info on these has been hard to come by but today Netflix has opened up on Army of Thieves, announcing the cast, releasing several images, and confirming that it’ll be out this Fall. The focus will be Matthias Schweighöfer’s expert safe-cracker Dieter, who played a key role in the big heist at the core of Army of the Dead. This will be set sometime before the original movie and the synopsis reads:
“Small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.”
Schweighöfer (who is also directing) will be joined by Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Jonathan Cohen, and Noémie Nakai, with the stills above showing them mid-robbery. John Wick 3 writer Shay Hatton is on writing duty (working from a story by Zack Snyder), with Zack and Deborah Snyder producing.
Netflix will be hoping that this garners similar attention to Army of the Dead, though it remains to be seen how (or indeed if) zombies will play a role here. Despite being a prequel we may still find out more about what was really going on in Las Vegas, as fans have made a great case that there are temporal shenanigans at play in the franchise.
No exact release date yet, but Army of Thieves will land on Netflix later this year.
