New Captain Marvel Synopsis Teases A Galactic War Coming To Earth

The first trailer for Captain Marvel is finally here and the studio's now kicking the marketing for the feminist superhero up a notch. Alongside our first look at Brie Larson's heroine in action, we also have an awesome poster that tells us the movie will go "higher, further, faster" than any other MCU film to date. Not to mention Marvel's also dropped this revamped synopsis, which promises untold danger coming to Earth (when doesn't it?).

“Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.”

The claim that the 1990s is “a previously unseen period” of the MCU’s history is mostly right. Thanks to the likes of the Captain America and Ant-Man films, we’ve got a feel for the development of the timeline from the 1940s to the 1980s but the 90s is largely unexplored. Black Panther did feature a flashback to the 1990s, but we’ll give the synopsis a pass on that one as it was only brief.

This plot summary is also the latest claim that Carol Danvers is one of the biggest guns in the MCU. From what we hear, she might even be the most powerful. Samuel L. Jackson seems to think so and Larson herself has hinted that her character might be able to lift planets. Looks like Thanos’ trick of moving a moon won’t seem so impressive once we’ve seen Captain Marvel do her thing.

Finally, the “galactic war” that’s set to come to Earth is between the Kree and the shapeshifting Skrulls, led by Ben Mendelsohn. Presumably, the “cadre of aliens” described is Starforce, the Kree military squad that Carol’s a part of, led by Jude Law’s Mar-Vell (well, probably) and also consisting of Gemma Chan’s Minn-Erva and Djimon Hounsou’s Korath (returning from GotG).

Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 8th, 2019, and after that first trailer, we can hardly wait.
