As two properties about sentient toys and a kid named Andy, Child’s Play and Toy Story have been the subject of a lot of tongue-in-cheek comparisons over the years, but with the upcoming Child’s Play reboot scheduled for release on the same day as Toy Story 4, Orion and MGM have savvily made the parallels all the more obvious. Moreover, thanks to a new video from Trailer Blend, we can imagine what the cherished Pixar series would be like if it had the tone of a Chucky movie.
Since the various short previews for Toy Story 4 haven’t given Trailer Blend a lot to work with, the new mock trailer consists of footage from the first three movies that’s edited to match the audio of the first Child’s Play trailer that came out last week. It makes for a pretty potent combination that brings sinister new context to that dead-eyed stare which Woody puts on when he’s pretending to be an inanimate object.
One additional parallel between Toy Story 4 and the Child’s Play reboot is that both have been met with some resistance from fans. In the case of the former, many have argued that 2010’s Toy Story 3 offered near-perfect closure to the series, which a fourth movie risks sullying. But while most of those same doubters will probably end up seeing the upcoming sequel anyway, the fan backlash towards the next Child’s Play is easily the more intense of the two, not least because franchise creator Don Mancini already had plans of his own to make a TV show that follows in the original continuity of the series.
Regardless, you can judge for yourself whether Toy Story 4 or the new Child’s Play have justified their existence when they each hit theaters on June 21st, 2019.
