Buried in Deadline’s report about Drew Goddard signing on to write and direct X-Force for Fox was news that New Mutants and Deadpool 2, two of the studio’s 2018 blockbusters alongside X-Men: Dark Phoenix, have now wrapped production.
Details are scarce, though we assume this footnote is referring to both films completing principal photography, thereby giving VFX artists ample time to color-correct and incorporate special effects wherever necessary before the real deadline looms.
From what we understand, Josh Boone’s New Mutants primarily shot on location in Boston under the cute working title ‘Growing Pains.’ Said to be inspired by the horror trappings of Stephen King (It) and John Hughes, New Mutants has assembled Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga for a story that centers on a young group of special individuals trying to escape the confines of a super-secret research facility.
Filming only began in July, meaning it’s unclear as yet whether Deadline’s report is factually accurate. Josh Boone has been mulling over New Mutants for some time, though, so there’s every chance his X-Men spinoff simply hit the ground running once production commenced.
Deadpool 2, on the other hand, sadly endured a trying spell in front of the cameras. Following the back-to-back casting of Zazie Beetz (Domino) and Infinity War‘s Josh Brolin (Cable), tragedy struck when stuntwoman Joi “SJ” Harris was killed while performing a motorcycle stunt. Subsequent reports were fairly damning, and even claimed that the fatal accident was wholly avoidable. It didn’t take long before Ryan Reynolds and Co. were back on the streets of Vancouver though, and we fully expect the finished product to include some form of tribute to the late Harris.
As things stand, New Mutants is on course to release on April 13th, 2018, before Deadpool 2 heralds the return of the Merc on June 1st.
