James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy just expanded its cast with three new heroes, indicating that the new DCU’s debut is going to hit the ground running when it comes to expanding this universe. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan’s Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane will be joined by Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced will play Hawkgirl.
Merced appears to have had a particularly good day, as not only was this casting confirmed but it was also her birthday. So, while taking a break from cake-cutting and present-opening, she took to Instagram to thank Gunn:
We’re hoping Gunn’s version of Hawkgirl takes cues from Justice League and Justice League Unlimited‘s animated version of the character. In this classic DCAU cartoon, she had quite the character arc, being torn between her Thanagarian heritage and her desire to protect her new home on Earth.
Despite liking the character, we’re also nervous that confirming more heroes this soon may not bode well for Superman: Legacy. We’ve been hoping for a movie that zeroes in on Superman and Lois Lane rather than having to introduce a bunch of new heroes to audiences, particularly as it’s now been a full decade since the purely Superman-focused Man of Steel.
Merced will likely reprise the role in other DCU movies, so perhaps this will be just a quick introduction before the plot moves on. But however it pans out, today is absolutely a day to celebrate. Here’s hoping the birthday party was a blast.
Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
