New trailer for Netflix film ‘You People’ absolutely weaponizes second-hand embarrassment

In only the best ways, of course.

Relationships have been a daunting task since the dawn of humanity, but the challenge perhaps always peaks around the time that you and your partner get introduced to each other’s parents. Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill recognized the potential of this dynamic, and quickly added a key piece of their newfound situational puzzle in the one and only Eddie Murphy. Fast forward to today, and we have a brand new trailer for You People, the upcoming Netflix comedy that looks all but ready to put The Office‘s use of second-hand embarrassment to shame.

You People stars Jonah Hill and Lauren London as Ezra and Amira, a pair of millennials and a new couple who are set to introduce each other to their parents, with both of them boasting about as much enthusiasm as you’d expect, as their families couldn’t possibly more different; Ezra comes from a white Jewish family, and Amira comes from a Black Muslim family. As the trailer has made decidedly clear, the film’s family dinner scenes are prepared to shove several metric tons of awkward tension down our throats. Indeed, as cultural and generational differences begin to come into play, Ezra and Amira soon realize that they have quite the road ahead of them.

Directed by Kenya Barris (black-ish) and written by Barris and Hill, You People features comedy legends Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Amira’s father and Ezra’s mother, respectively. Nia Long and David Duchovny also star as Amira’s mother and Ezra’s father. With such a rich wealth of talent behind it, You People looks set to handle some of the world’s most relatable topics in the most giddily, wholesomely uncomfortable way possible.

You People will release to Netflix on Jan. 27.
