Now that David Sandberg and the folks at New Line have waded through the spooky origins of Annabelle, directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are preparing to cordially invite horror fans on a journey back toward ground zero of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre saga with Leatherface.
Pegged to arrive in the latter stages of October – or mid-September, if you happen to have access to DirecTV – Leatherface will dive deep into the bloody history of the Sawyer family and their cannibalistic ways. Casting-wise, we know that the prequel features Jessica Madsen, Sam Coleman, Sam Strike and James Bloor as four inmates who manage to claw their way out of a mental hospital, and the official plot synopsis reads as so:
In Texas, years before the events of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriffs’ daughter dead. Ten years later, he kidnaps a young nurse and escapes with 3 other inmates. Pursued by authorities including the deranged sheriff out to avenge his daughter’s death, the young Sawyer teen goes on a violent road trip from hell, molding him into the monster known now as Leatherface.
Sounds intriguing, right? Early reviews have been very positive so far, with the film sitting at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, and now, to drum up even more excitement, the studio’s released a short but sweet behind the scenes look at the movie. Seen above, it gives us a glimpse into the production along with some interviews with the cast and crew. It’s not the most extensive or in-depth video, but for those eager for a bit more from the prequel before its release, this should certainly do the trick.
Leatherface has been slated for a premiere via DirecTV on September 21st, before Lionsgate launches Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s nightmarish prequel into select theaters one month later. By that stage, the big screen will be teeming with spooky delights ranging from Saw sequel Jigsaw to The Snowman, while new seasons of The Walking Dead and Stranger Things are pegged for a similar window as well.
