The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to fight the battles we never could. Unfortunately though, after the falling out of Captain America: Civil War, it seems that everyone had better things to do, with the new Captain Marvel Prelude comic showing Nick Fury and Maria Hill trying and failing to bring the old gang back together.
The new series is set to provide a little context on the distress call sent by Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the post-credits of Avengers: Infinity War, filling in the three-year gap between Fury and Hill’s appearances in Avengers: Age of Ultron and the Russo Brothers’ latest. And according to a few panels, the pair tried talking Tony Stark and Steve Rogers into putting their spat aside for the sake of the team, though neither seemed willing to swallow their pride.
Of course, we now know that Earth’s Mightiest heroes would soon be mobilized by the arrival of Thanos, with Nick even heavily teasing this impending storm with a few ominous lines:
“I’d like to keep my options open. It’s only a matter of time before some bigger intergalactic problem needs to be solved. Doing this case-by-case cleanup isn’t what this team was meant for.”
Though we’re only one issue into this series, you can expect the comic to offer plenty more insights on MCU history after the events of Captain America: Civil War, as well as providing some hints of what to expect from next year’s Captain Marvel. We’ve already seen a mention of Carol Danvers herself, with Fury referring to the character as a backup hero whose help he hopefully won’t ever need.
We’ll likely learn why Nick’s so reluctant to give Carol a call when her big screen debut hits theaters on March 8th, 2019. After that, she looks to be joining Stark, Rogers, and the rest of the gang when Avengers 4 comes out on May 3rd.
