What better way to celebrate 40 years of Star Wars than an anthology designed to recount all of the many untold stories scattered across Lucasfilm’s galaxy far, far away?
Well, that’s exactly what Renée Ahdieh set out to do with Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, a recently-released novel packed to the rafters with unsung heroes and tales of valor, villainy, and far-flung quests to save the galaxy. Available from October 2nd, Star Wars fans have discovered a treasure trove of content pertaining to Lucasfilm’s crown jewel, though Screen Rant has gone one step further to suggest that From a Certain Point of View contains some story clues that relate to the long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff.
As we learned back in August, the Powers That Be have finally issued the go-ahead for a Star Wars anthology pic centering on the beloved Jedi Master, with Stephen Daldry in contention to direct. It’s currently incubating in development under the working title of Joshua Tree, thereby confirming a return trip to Tatooine. But as SR notes, one chapter included in Renée Ahdieh’s novel, aptly titled “Master and Apprentice,” points to an exchange between Obi-Wan and his own master, Qui-Gon Jinn.
In keeping with the book’s title, this scene, in particular, focuses on Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon as they begin to deliberate Luke’s future, most notably when would be the best time to drop the bomb that Darth Vader is, in fact, Anakin Skywalker. The alternate scene features a solemn Qui-Gon, who holds himself responsible for Anakin straying down a dark and dangerous path, from which there was no return…until the dying moments of Jedi.
Elsewhere, From a Certain Point of View then explores Qui-Gon achieving immortality after becoming one with the Force, which essentially allows him to establish a physical presence in this mortal realm of ours. That’s something Obi-Wan goes on to echo in original Star Wars trilogy, leading to that by-now famous line, “if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”
This, coupled with Ahdieh’s revelation that the duo enjoyed multiple exchanges between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, has led some fans to believe that Qui-Gon will indeed appear in the planned Obi-Wan spinoff after all. A Coruscant native, Qui-Gon was famously portrayed by Liam Neeson in the prequels, so perhaps we’ll see him circle back to the franchise in the vein of Harrison Ford and, potentially, Ewan McGregor? Time will tell.
Next up for Lucasfilm’s rebooted Star Wars franchise is the release of The Last Jedi on December 15th of this year.
