With a production budget in excess of $300 million, Avengers: Infinity War is a carefully crafted Marvel masterpiece.
Be it the moment-to-moment character interactions or the eye-popping visual effects, the MCU’s biggest ever movie is a success on practically every level, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that even the smallest little details – like, say, the date mentioned by Pepper Potts during one of Infinity War‘s deleted scenes – carry some sense of purpose.
Per Reddit, it’s been confirmed that the deleted scene involving Pepper and Tony Stark contains a very subtle Easter egg that’s all about Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey. That’s because the date mentioned by Pepper Potts (read: August 27th) is actually the date RDJ and Susan married to become the Downeys back in 2005 – three years before Downey Jr.’s career launched into the stratosphere thanks to Iron Man.
It’s an incredibly subtle detail, but it’s further proof that Avengers: Infinity War is filled with tiny little nods and callbacks to MCU past – not to mention the actors responsible for building this franchise into the global, $17 billion juggernaut it is today.
You’ll also remember that the whole Tony Stark/Pepper Potts marriage arc was first teased during the finale of Spider-Man: Homecoming, when Peter Parker was supposed to be introduced as the latest Avenger (replete with the Iron Spider suit, no less). Things didn’t exactly go according to plan, and Tony was forced to concoct a backup plan to appease those members of the press who had made the journey to Avengers HQ. And the rest is history.
Granted, Avengers: Infinity War threw a spanner in the works for Stark’s wedding plans, and we’ll have to wait until Avengers 4 arrives next year before we find out what the Russo Brothers have in store for the MCU’s loved-up couple.
