Deadpool 3 is probably Marvel’s most mysterious movie. While the film will bring Ryan Reynolds back as the Merc With a Mouth alongside Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, there’s been lots of speculation about what other characters from the Fox universe will be joining them on their journey into the MCU.
Unfortunately, one actress has explained that she won’t be in the sequel: Zazie Beetz, who portrays the mutant known as Domino in Deadpool 2, has officially squashed rumors of her return. While at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere for her Max limited series, Full Circle, Decider caught up with Beetz and asked her how Deadpool 3 production was faring during the writer’s strike, as WGA rules mean that Reynolds cannot improvise on set during a strike.
Beetz replied, “Well I’m actually not in Deadpool 3, so I don’t know what they’re doing [about improvisation]. I’m assuming they’re probably taking a pause. […] I’m excited to watch it.”
Beetz’ performance as Domino, a mutant with preternatural luck, was one of the highlights of Deadpool 2. Although Beetz was more of a tertiary character in the film, her presence was strong and charismatic. In fact, her sequences made for some exciting and unexpected action set pieces, and many had hoped that she would be reprising her role in Deadpool 3.
After “pleading the fifth” about her involvement in the film just this past March, the rumors of her return to the franchise began to ramp up further. Unfortunately, it looks like Domino isn’t going to be joining Wolverine and Deadpool on their multiversal road trip, but there’s still hope that she could show up as the MCU variant of the character somewhere down the line (or even as a universe hopping character).
Marvel has remained mum on the topic of mutants (bar a few references here and there), but the cast list for the film definitely leaves room for Beetz’ return at some point. Jackman and Reynolds are, of course, returning, and other actors from the franchise are also confirmed to be returning to the film. This list includes Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa, Karan Soni’s Dopinder, Leslie Uggams’ Blind Al, Rob Delaney’s Peter, Brianna Hildebrand’s Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna’s Yukio, and Stefan Kapičić’s Colossus. While Patrick Stewart starred as Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he portrayed a variant of the character – not the one that went through the events depicted in the X-Men film franchise.
