Paramount’s Transformers Writers Room Dreamed Up An Idea For An R-Rated Bumblebee Movie

Had things panned out differently, Paramount may well have issued the green light on an R-rated Transformers movie centering on Bumblebee.

The Transformers blowout continues apace today, and we’re still to lay eyes on the first full teaser for The Last Knight.

After learning that Paramount’s upcoming spinoffs may take place in different historical eras, Collider has relayed a new interview with series stalwart Michael Bay, who revealed that early on in development, the franchise’s newfound writers room pitched him an R-rated script for the upcoming Bumblebee solo movie that’s tentatively pegged for 2018. Bay begins by confirming that he’ll be actively involved in fostering the standalone pic, but refrained from saying whether or not he’ll direct.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on that front as time wears on, but one thing we do know for sure is that Steven S. DeKnight of Daredevil fame will have a hand in the screenplay. Here’s what Bay had to share: “I would be very involved but we’ve got someone just starting work on the script right now. Steven [S. DeKnight] is involved too but he’s shooting too.”

Little is known about the story of Paramount’s planned Bumblebee spinoff – The Last Knight will seemingly leave the door open for “a really large universe,” but other than that it is anyone’s guess – but Michael Bay went on to reveal that there is an R-rated, Quentin Tarantino-esque pitch that we’ll ultimately never see.

“You know, yeah, that would be fun. There’s actually one idea that would be really fun R rated, with Bumblebee. I don’t wanna say, but it would be really fun. Very Quentin [Tarantino], you know.”

Meanwhile, Transformers: The Last Knight is the next step for Paramount’s juggernaut franchise, and you can look forward to that one hitting theatres on June 23, 2017.
