As a horror fan, something feels very amiss this Halloween season. What’s October without a Paranormal Activity movie? How am I supposed to function after growing so accustom to the “found footage” scares that Oren Peli and company have been delivering for the last four years! I’m all itchy and anxious – I think I’m going through Paranormal Activity withdrawal.
Next year is going to see two Paranormal Activity movies though, making up for lost time, with Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones slated for release on January 3rd, 2014. Little has been known about this Latino spinoff flick except that franchise writer Christopher Landon will get behind the camera this time around – but all that changed last week when the first trailer appeared. Introducing us to a cursed boy who lives in Oxnard, California, it looks like the newest franchise entry is going to explore a lot more background mythology, with a heavy focus on possession instead of the typical haunted atmosphere. Exorcisms, dark beings, flying thugs – is this the same franchise we’ve come to love (or hate, depending on the viewer)?
Following up last week’s trailer release, we now have the international trailer for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, which unfortunately offers a minimal amount of new content. In fact, the only addition I saw was a longer shot during the exorcism-type ceremony, and I noticed they trimmed down some of the lead-in material to make Landon’s film appear more aggressive.
Even with the lack of new material, it’s still worth the post and the watch for our non-English speaking readers, as the voices have been dubbed over with native voices. I personally hate this type of delivery for foreign films, and would prefer subtitles myself, but if a movie is good enough, any audio synching problems can be ignored – right?
Since it’s an English language film though, I don’t have to worry about the dubbing, and can focus on a movie that’s really piqued my interest. I’ll admit this was probably the least terrifying trailer from the series, but it was also the most engrossing. Landon has grabbed my curiosity by bringing back familiar faces while pushing forward this possession angle, complete with deep-routed religious undertones. There’s so much more going on with this demon, and I can’t wait to see how Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones furthers its legend.
