We’ve been waiting a long time for Wonder Woman 1984 and we’ve still got a ways to go yet. Originally planned for a Christmas 2019 release, the movie has been pushed back to mid-2020. Given how much we’ve seen of it already, that’s an excruciatingly long time until it arrives, but at least we’ve got another glimpse at the sequel today courtesy of director Patty Jenkins, who shared a new photo to mark Gal Gadot’s 33rd birthday.
The picture, seen below, shows the character in her Diana Prince civilian guise, peering down from a mezzanine at something happening below. It’s impossible to say exactly what the context of the scene is, but hey, Gadot’s at least looking pretty damn stylish.
Despite the movie still being over a year away, we already have a decent idea of various plot elements. Obviously, we know the film is set in 1984, but we also know it’ll be about a conflict with the Soviet Union, will feature Diana doing battle with Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah and will see the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor. That last one is a bit of a head-scratcher given that his death was a major event in the climax of Wonder Woman, but fans think they’ve got the particulars of his comeback puzzled out.
While Cheetah is set to provide Diana with a physical challenge, Pedro Pascal is playing a mysterious and unnamed businessman character. There’s a convincing argument that this might be the secret alter-ego of the Greek God of the Underworld Hades, who’s resurrected Trevor in order to manipulate Diana into doing his evil bidding. If that does prove to be the case, expect the climax of Wonder Woman 1984 to be an emotional rollercoaster as Diana chooses between the love of her life and saving the world one more time.
