Hey, remember a few years ago when everyone and their mother was talking about a new Pee-wee Herman film? Star Paul Reubens himself was kind of insanely excited about it, but producer Judd Apatow has kept a lid on the whole thing. Thankfully, it sounds like the Pee-wee movie is still in the offing, with Apatow himself teasing the project once again.
Speaking to students at Loyola Marymount University (via The Playlist), Apatow let them, and the world, know that the Pee-wee movie is slightly closer to being made. Still without a title, the film will star Paul Reubens once more in the title role; what the childish hero is going to get up to in this installment is currently unknown, though various titles, including Pee-wee Takes a Holiday, are being kicked around.
Apatow also confirmed that the script, by Reubens and Paul Rust, is finished, so it’s only a matter of time before the film gets off the ground. It might be a while before Pee-wee Herman hits the big screen again, but at least this is confirmation that the project is in the works.
There’s no word yet if Apatow intends to direct the film himself or to simply stay in the background as a producer. If he is going to direct though, Pee-wee will have to wait: Apatow’s next project is Trainwreck, which begins shooting this summer. Still, it’s nice to know that Pee-wee’s big screen outing is waiting in the wings.
As always, you can bet that we will be keeping an eye on developments when the Pee-wee Herman film finally gets going.
