Despite the recently released Pet Sematary remake not being the box office juggernaut that was 2017’s IT, the Stephen King adaptation still raked in a respectable amount of dough and garnered its share of praise. Considering how it fared pretty well with the current crop of moviegoers, one would think that a sequel will arrive before long.
If you’ve been keeping up with news pertaining to the franchise, then you may have heard about how the next flick may wind up being a prequel. Still, it’s important to note how there’s no guarantee of such a thing because it sounds like the Powers That Be are still brainstorming. But at least one thing’s for certain: we’re not getting a remake 1992’s Pet Sematary 2.
While speaking with ComicBook.com, screenwriter Jeff Buhler basically said that he and his colleagues have yet to settle on anything:
“We had discussions about possible followup films, and for the most part, everybody feels like we’ve told the story of the Creeds. It’s difficult, there are ways to continue this story, this particular story, but it feels almost, the trajectory of this film feels like we flew the plane into the mountain a little bit. It just blows up.”
As Buhler continued, not only did he tease various places the story could go, but it also very much sounds like a prequel may be in the cards after all:
“So a lot of the ideas that we’ve been batting around currently, recently, have all been about, more about digging into the mythology of the town, these rituals that children present, the mythology of the Micmac, the Wendigo, the cemetery, the origins, Jud’s life. So it looks like, I don’t want to promise anything, because we don’t know, we’re not even down the road on an idea yet.”
