If you’re up for a dark, twisted tale this summer, then you won’t have to wait any longer than August, when one of the darkest animated films will be returning to theaters. We are talking about the 2009 fantasy horror Coraline, a movie that is bound to stay with you for good due to how it expertly explores mature and dark themes such as fear, alternative identities, and bravery in the face of all things macabre.
LAIKA – well-known for producing some of the finest stop-motion and animated masterpieces including The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings to name just two announced – Aug. 14 and 15 as the release dates, 14 years after its initial theatrical release. Only this time, viewers will be treated to further additions, namely behind-the-scenes footage of production and filming.
As intriguing as it sounds, the plot itself has managed to attract enormous popular attention even to date, contributing to the film’s acclaimed status. It revolves around the titular character, who on one fine day is teleported into an alternate dimension where she witnesses a better version of her day-to-day lifestyle, only for her to discover the sinister intentions behind the incident. Thereafter, she is required to take brave measures to protect herself and her family from the jaws of destruction.
Voiced by talents like Henry Selick, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, and Keith David, the film is definitely worth multiple viewings.
Coraline is re-releasing in theaters on Aug. 14 and 15, 2023.
