Arnie’s back! And it looks like he’s stolen Dirty Harry’s gun. Ahead of its January 2013 release, Lionsgate has released the first poster for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s solo comeback effort The Last Stand which shows the Austrian Oak armed, wounded and looking pretty darned pissed.
The Last Stand will find Schwarzenegger as Sheriff Ray Owens, the peacekeeper of the small southern town of Sommerton Junction, relegated to the boondocks after a botched operation during his time with the LAPD. However, following an escape from the FBI, a drug kingpin, members of his gang, and a hostage are all heading toward his town where the police are preparing to make a last stand before they cross the border.
Forrest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville and Rodrigo Santoro also star and the film will be directed by the great South Korean filmmaker Kim Ji-woon who has helmed exceptional genre deconstructions The Good, The Bad, The Weird and I Saw the Devil and the classic horror thriller A Tale of Two Sisters (which, if you recall, was remade as The Uninvited in 2009).
With the old west, cowboy-style feel of The Last Stand let’s hope Ji-woon can bring at least a fraction of the energy and incredible action sequences he did in the revisionist western that was The Good, The Bad, The Weird. Aside from that hope, it will simply be great to see The Governator back in the spotlight.
Schwarzenegger will first been seen in this Friday’s ensemble action romp The Expendables 2 in which he reprises his role of Trench in an extended role after performing a cameo in the first.
As for The Last Stand, that action offering will waltz into theaters January 18 and will hopefully infuse some energy into the normally dull early-year slate.
