Though many believed the film’s second trailer was set for release a fortnight ago, for Ghost in the Shell, Paramount is thinking bigger – much bigger.
In anticipation of this Sunday’s Super Bowl LI, the biggest sporting event on the NFL calendar that will see the New England Patriots go up against the Atlanta Falcons, the studio has secured a primetime slot for Rupert Sander’s live-action manga thriller. Indeed, Ghost in the Shell is one of the many 2017 tentpoles prepped and ready to showcase new footage this coming weekend and in order to ramp up excitement, Paramount has dropped a scintillating new promo that sees Scarlett Johansson’s ass-kicking cyborg leap into action in every sense of the word.
Headlining an all-star international cast, Johansson is on board to play Major Motoko Kusanagi, a one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid and the flagship product of Hanka Robotics. Flanked by a team of elite officers known as Section 9, The Major trains her sights on all of the cyborg extremists and terrorists roaming the streets, and will encounter a fair handful of big existential questions – is The Major’s identity really her own? – in the process. Batou (Pilou Asbæk) and Daisuke Aramaki (Takeshi Kitano) are two allies that will contribute to the cause.
Rounding out the enviable ensemble are Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki and Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, along with Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo, who together form that aforementioned task force.
Ghost in the Shell is booked in for release on March 31st and is one of two Paramount tentpoles set to unveil new footage during this Sunday’s Super Bowl LI. Transformers: The Last Knight is, of course, the other blockbuster in question, and you can expect Michael Bay’s soft reboot to stomp into theaters on June 23rd.
