It’s only a day before its domestic release but a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man is already being written and a couple of the details of what will happen in the sequel have already begun to leak out. At the premiere for the film, MTV spoke to a producer who gave away some little tidbits of information, mainly about the time frame of the movie.

When asked about whether or not the sequel would catch up with Andrew Garfield‘s real age (he’s nearly 30), producer Matt Tolmach said this:

Eventually, who knows? But the next movie will take place in relative proximity to this one… We have more business to do here [and now] with the character. The story, there’s a lot more to be told in this story, and this quest that he’s on. So there won’t be a huge time jump.

I haven’t seen the film yet so I am not aware of how it ends. That being said, I predict if the sequel is set soon after the events of the first film I imagine they would set up a whole new villain in The Amazing Spider-Man‘s denouement. However, if that’s the case, I can’t imagine the producer would have been so cagey about who the sequel’s antagonist would be. Here’s what he had to say:

There are so many good ones, but I don’t want to give anything away. That’s the coolest surprise!

Personally, I think that if they’re going for a total reinvention they should attempt to move further away from the original 3 movies and go for completely new villains, which is a problem because Sam Raimi snatched two of the best and most interesting villains: Green Goblin and Doc Ock. It would also be very hard to top the two performances given by Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina in those roles. The other issue is that some of Spider-Man’s other villains like Rhino, Mysterio and Vulture are kind of lame.

Kingpin wouldn’t be so bad I suppose but none of the Spider-Man villains were ever as exciting or as interesting as the best of the Batman villains. Still, it will be interesting to see what the screenwriters, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, come up with.

The Amazing Spider-Man will hit screens nationwide tomorrow.
