While we know that The Wolverine 3 is in production, we still don’t know too much about what to expect from it. Thankfully, Patrick Stewart has cleared the air on a couple of things today during an interview with Collider to promote Blunt Talk.
When asked if he was involved in the film and if it would be based on the Old Man Logan arc, the actor said:
“I think what you say is true. There is a project in development. I understand that Professor Xavier will be making more than an appearance, however, and that intrigues me. And the idea of an old Wolverine – I’m really looking forward to Hugh Jackman getting old. You know, damn him. He looks so great! So I’m hoping to see him covered in prosthetics, you know? And then he’ll make me look better if that’s the case.”
The biggest takeaway here is that Professor X will show up in the film, as up until now, that hadn’t been confirmed. It’s also interesting that Stewart says he thinks they’re using the Old Man Logan story, as that’s been heavily rumored to be the basis for the character’s third solo outing and was even confirmed by Jackman not too long ago. It would make for an exciting film, too, as the arc is a definite fan favorite.
Written by Mark Millar, the story follows an older Logan, who’s survived the extinction of the X-Men and is living out his final days with a loving family in a landscape ruled over by territorial supervillains. Though he has renounced the Wolverine, Logan is forced to once again extend his claws when something horrific happens (no spoilers), leading him down a dark road in an unfamiliar world.
While it’s unlikely that they would follow the plot beat for beat, given where the rest of the X-Men movies are currently at and are heading, it’s still intriguing to hear that they’ll be using it as inspiration.
