With all eyes trained on the imminent X-Men: Apocalypse, there’s little-to-no information to dissect relating to Josh Boone’s planned New Mutants spinoff – that is, aside from the rumored ’90s setting.
But Fox producer and all-round X-Men stalwart Simon Kinberg has at least offered up one verified trinket to whet our collective appetite. Speaking to Collider in anticipation of Apocalypse, the screenwriter-cum-producer noted that Professor X will indeed feature in New Mutants. But will it be McAvoy or Stewart? These timelines are so confusing…
[zerg]Should Charles Francis Xavier have a role in Boone’s anticipated offshoot, it would at least conicide with reports suggesting both he and Alexandra Shipp’s Storm would play a part in Fox’s brand new X-Men movie, which also appears to be eyeing a production start in early 2017.
And though Kinberg did caution that the Professor’s inclusion in New Mutants is subject to change, he stated that “right now, as the movie exists, Professor X would be a part of a New Mutants movie.” Whether it is McAvoy or Stewart is still up for question, but either actor could be joining forces with Maisie Williams and The Witch breakout Anya Taylor-Joy, who have each been linked with key members of the titular squad.
That’s an ensemble that boasts the likes of Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock, who could well be making their bow in the thick of the ’90s – it makes sense, too, given the timeline of First Class (1960s), Days of Future Past (1970s) and this month’s X-Men: Apocalypse (1980s). For now, according to Kinberg, Josh Boone’s New Mutants is readying itself for a 2017 production start, meaning official casting details should be emerging sooner rather than later.
