Among the many compliments hailed at Edge of Tomorrow, one of the most prominent was in regards to Emily Blunt’s turn in the sci-fi actioner as battle-worn veteran Sergeant Rita Rose Vrataski. It was a role that proved to be just as memorable as that of Tom Cruise’s, and the actress is dipping her toe in the genre once more – albeit for a film that swaps alien invasion for gruelling drug busts – with Denis Villeneuve’s anticipated thriller, Sicario.
Partnering with his regular cinematographer Roger Deakins once more after 2013’s excellent genre piece Prisoners, the director’s latest project is shaping up to be a slick, pulse-pounding drama, and today’s clip only drives that point home. Charting a drugs bust carried out by Benicio Del Toro’s enigmatic consultant, the footage sees Emily Blunt’s rookie FBI agent get thrust in at the deep end upon joining the elite task force, and the violent scenes that unfold give us a fair indication that Villeneuve isn’t pulling any punches.
Joining Blunt and Del Toro for the Mexican thriller is Josh Brolin, the official that saw a glimmer of talent in Blunt’s eyes and vouched for her to join the team. However, as the squad becomes embroiled in the formidable border drugs scene, our protagonist begins to call her loyalty and commitment to the FBI’s mission into question.
Sicario is due to slink into theaters on September 24. For now, you can get acquainted with the leading characters in the drama via the gallery below.
In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent (Emily Blunt) is enlisted by an elite government task force official (Josh Brolin) to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past (Benicio Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.
