Puss in Boots – the spinoff of Dreamworks’ never-ending Shrek series – opened at number one in the box office this weekend, earning $34 million, crushing the other Oct. 28 releases: The Rum Diary and In Time.
The spicy Shrek sequel, starring Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots, achieved an 82 percent on Rottentomatoes, which is miraculous for a film that’s a spinoff of a sequel. It also earned a score of 65 on Metacritic, which is similarly impressive for a film of its short stature.
Paranormal Activity 3 continued to attract thrill-seeking audiences, coming in second place with $18.5 million, making its overall gross $81.3 million. While the film will probably continue to make a boatload of money between its highly popular predecessors and positive ratings, today is finally Halloween, and the viewers should trail off exponentially.
Now for the sad news: In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, opened in third place, making $12 million, and Johnny Depp‘s The Rum Diary actually opened in fifth, behind Footloose, gathering a meek $5 million. While I didn’t have high hopes for In Time, it’s mildly shocking to see a film starring Depp do so poorly. After all, the man starred in Pirates of the Caribbean, one of the highest grossing series of all time.
Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised when I enjoyed Puss in Boots this weekend and I’m happy to see it doing well. Did you spend your hard-earned cash on any of these films? Let us know in the comments.
