We’re quickly approaching the release of Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, and Quentin Tarantino has hit the press junkets to talk about everything from his favorite Marvel movie to his interest in helming a Star Trek film.
While the iconic sci-fi franchise is continuing to find much success on the small screen, its future in cinemas has been left up in the air, withĀ Star Trek 4Ā plagued by wage disputes and lackluster scripts. Thankfully, though, Tarantinoās pitch for a separateĀ TrekĀ movie outside of the mainline series is still alive at Paramount.
And though we don’t know very much about it just yet, according to the man himself, it’ll be something likeĀ Pulp FictionĀ if it were set in space. Speaking to Deadline in a recent interview, here’s how he described it:
“I get annoyed at Simon Pegg. He doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff. One of the comments he said, he’s like “Well, look, it’s not going to be Pulp Fiction in space.” Yes, it is! [laughs hard]. If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be. It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space.
That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this sh*t in it, ever. There’s no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that’s why we want to make it. It’s, at the very least, unique in that regard. There is a gangster element to what we’re doing with the Star Trek thing that works out pretty good.”
Well, you can certainly color us intrigued. Unfortunately, Tarantino wouldn’t spill much more on the plot aside from that, but at least we now know the vibe and tone he’s going for with the project, and if anyone can make something like this work, it’s him.
That being said, until we actually see the posters on the walls, we’re going to have a tough time believing that Tarantino will ever get this pic made. After all, his next project looks to be a Django sequel/Zorro crossover, and he’s also stated several times now that he’s pretty close to retirement. Then again, he’s also said he might make Star TrekĀ his last movie, so who knows? At this point, all we can do is sit patiently and await further updates.
Tell us, though, are you excited to see what Tarantino could do with the beloved sci-fi property? As always, take to the comments section and let us know.
