As much as I wish that Hollywood wouldn’t remake The Raid: Redemption, Gareth Evans’ near-perfect action film, it seems that it is indeed happening. Patrick Hughes is at the helm and pre-production has already begun. However, the project seems to have hit a slight bump in the road today as it’s now been delayed. Originally set to shoot in September, the start date has been moved to the first quarter of 2015.
Apparently, the reason for the delay is casting, as the producers are hoping to bring in a big name actor. One source says that the wish list includes Luke Evans, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo and Ethan Hawke. If true, then it would make sense that the film would need to be delayed. All four of those talents are red hot at the moment and likely have very busy schedules.
Though a delay usually isn’t a good thing, it might actually signal some promising news in this case. It means that the filmmakers are taking their time with the remake instead of just rushing something out to capitalize on the goodwill built up by the original film (and its sequel). Or at least, we hope that’s the case.
I really can’t imagine how a remake of The Raid: Redemption can be anywhere near as spectacular and impressive as what Evans delivered in 2011. It’s my favorite action film of all time and I’m extremely skeptical of this Americanized version. While it may be entertaining, and have some big names behind it, I just can’t see it doing justice to the original.
