Two Irishmen, an American and a kick-ass arms dealer (among others) walk into a deserted warehouse; it may sound like the beginning of a flippant gag, but it’s actually the elevator pitch to Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, which has just premiered its breathless first trailer from TIFF 2016.
Issuing a call to arms, Free Fire chronicles the story of Justine (Brie Larson) after she brokers a weapons deal with some old acquaintances, Ord (Armie Hammer) and Vernon (Sharlto Copley). The rendezvous? A shoddy old warehouse that quickly devolves into a cavernous arena once said deal goes south – and fast.
Also starring Peaky Blinders stalwart Cillian Murphy, Michael Smiley and Armie Hammer, Wheatley then stages a ruthless, typically bloody game of life or death. But it’s really the director’s mesmerizing style that arrests our attention. As the filmmaker behind such bleak hits as Kill List, Sightseers and the Tom Hiddleston-fronted High-Rise, the British director has long proven his knack for cult hits that are as entertaining as they are unforgivably dark.
That’s a streak that courses through the veins of Free Fire, too, with today’s first peek revealing shots of Armie Hammer fixing his hairdo while bullets cut through the air at electrifying pace. We can hardly wait to see what else Wheatley has up his sleeve when the full feature rolls around.
