Rian Johnson Confirms He’s Still Working On His Star Wars Trilogy

Despite the persistent rumor that Rian Johnson won’t be moving forward with his Star Wars trilogy, the director has insisted time and time again that he hasn’t left the project. But in case there was any lingering doubt that the Last Jedi helmsman will return to the franchise, it seems that Johnson has once more confirmed that his trilogy is happening.

This latest announcement comes from CinemaCon, where Johnson screened some footage from his upcoming crime drama Knives Out. According to Caleb Williams of Geeks WorldWide, the filmmaker got onto the subject of his Star Wars movies, and while it doesn’t sound like he offered many details on the planned trilogy, he did at least reaffirm that, yes, he’s still working on it.

Seeing how Knives Out isn’t due to hit theaters until November, it could still be some wait before Johnson gets cameras rolling on another Lucasfilm adventure. In fact, it currently seems likely that the next movie will be coming to us from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

A report from last month, for example, alleged that the pair are aiming to start shooting their first Star Wars film in the fall. And while this claim has yet to be confirmed, it’s at least expected that the franchise will be Benioff and Weiss’s next gig after the final season of Game of Thrones.

Here’s hoping that next week’s Star Wars Celebration can offer some clarification on the franchise’s plans beyond 2019. But whatever the future holds for the space saga, Star Wars: Episode IX is set to bring the current era to a close when it comes out on December 20th.
