Last week, Robert Downey Jr. changed his stance on the fate of Iron Man 4 yet again. Throwing a cryptic tidbit to reporters (“I’m sure we’ll ride that thing. You’ve got to surf that all the way in to shore.”), he essentially reneged on what he’d said the previous month. He then followed that up during an interview with Deadline, in which he jokingly said he’d reprise the role if Mel Gibson directed the pic.
After his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last night, however, we finally have a solid confirmation on the status of the movie. When the talk show host pushed him for details, he replied: “I know there’s going to be more Marvel movies, and they have big ideas of how to do it best,” Downey coyly said, skirting around the topic. He then stated, “we’re in the middle of negotiations, blah blah blah.” At which point Ellen pushed for a definitive answer, “So, yes?” leading Downey to admit “Okay, yes!” You can check out the brief clip taken from the show above.
At present, Downey Jr.’s contract only extends to next summer’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron and The Avengers 3, which is expected in May 2018. If he is in line to play Stark once more in a standalone feature, then that may have some effect on the recent murmurings concerning the line-up for The Avengers 3. In case you haven’t heard, yesterday, we heard that the third instalment may feature an entirely different leading crew of superheroes.
Whatever Marvel has in store, we won’t have to wait long to find out. In a Reddit AMA today, the actor revealed another key bit of info that should resolve speculation once and for all: “Sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered.”
We can’t wait to hear what’s to come for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and are especially pleased to hear that Iron Man 4 is on its way. Are you?
