Long before Captain America 3 evolved into Civil War, Marvel fans were left on tenterhooks as Robert Downey Jr. toyed with the idea of donning the famous suit for Iron Man 4 and ever since, it’s spawned a ‘will he, won’t he’ debate that only continues to rage online.
In fact, only a fortnight ago the actor himself effectively cooled talks of another solo movie for his Tony Stark, claiming that in many ways Civil War represents a “mini Iron Man 4” for his genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist. Now, there’s a new wrinkle to the story with Downey Jr. revealing to ABC that he “could do one more” after all.
[zerg]During an extended featurette spotlighting the imminent Captain America: Civil War, Downey Jr. was once again quizzed about the possibility of an Iron Man 4, and just when fans expected the MCU stalwart to deflect the question, the actor appeared to have a change of heart.
Of course, Disney and Marvel will have final say on the fabled sequel. It’s no secret that Marvel movies featuring Downey Jr. pull in the big bucks at the box office – Iron Man 3, for instance, stormed to $1.2 billion worldwide off the back of The Avengers – and that the actor is once again dropping hints regarding Iron Man 4 could very well indicate that his role in next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming may be bigger than first anticipated.
Currently acting under a per-picture basis, the jury’s still out on Downey’s potential commitment to Iron Man 4, but we’ll keep you posted nevertheless. Expect the actor to return as Marvel’s man-in-the-tin-can with the release of Captain America: Civil War on May 6. Beyond that, there’s also that appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming to look forward to, not to mention the possibility of taking on the Mad Titan for the Russo brothers’ two-part Avengers: Infinity War.
