The future of the DCEU may be very up in the air at the moment, especially with the recent debacle surrounding Batgirl not helping matters. But if there’s one thing that fans can definitely look forward to seeing more of, it’s Henry Cavill’s Superman.
Thus far, the actor has donned the red cape three times, with each appearance depicting a specific dramatic chapter in the making of the superhero who’s beloved around the world. Man Of Steel was his origin story, and saw Kal-El become Clark Kent, who then became a fledgling Superman. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, meanwhile, saw Superman wrestle with consequence, true sacrifice and death, and Justice League sees the hero resurrected as a being who has come to terms with his identity, and truly embraces it.
So, now that we have a more mature Superman, where does the character go from here within the movie universe? That’s currently unclear, but Henry Cavill recently confirmed that he doesn’t intend on relinquishing the super-suit any time soon, saying:
“Putting the suit on was fantastic. I love wearing that suit. No matter how warm or uncomfortable it gets. It’s the Superman suit. There’s no feeling like it. It’s a truly unique, special thing and I hope I get to do it for many more years. I’m really happy.”
Following that up now is a new report from Revenge of the Fans, who state that their sources tell them Cavill is hoping to extend his deal. Apparently, Shazam! will be the final appearance on his current contract and then Man of Steel 2, which is still happening according to ROTF, will be the first film on his new deal.
Nothing’s been set in stone just yet, but from what we understand, both parties are into the idea of extending their relationship and it’s just a matter of time now before it’s made official. Perhaps an announcement will come ahead of Comic-Con? Time will tell, but it’s certainly sounding positive.
That being said, we’d still advise taking this report with a grain of salt as it doesn’t come directly from the studio, but at the same time, Revenge of the Fans is usually pretty on point with their intel and there’s no reason not to trust them here. Like we mentioned above, we already know that Cavill wants to stick around for a while longer, and we imagine Warner Bros. will make that happen.
In regards to where the character will appear next, well, Shazam! seems like a certainty (even though the studio hasn’t confirmed it) and again, Man of Steel 2 is still being developed and is expected to see the light of the day. We certainly hope that remains the case, too, as many saw Zack Snyder’s 2013 pic as Superman’s equivalent of Batman Begins, and lamented the fact that he’s yet to get his own counterpart to The Dark Knight, as it were.
Having countless comic books to act as source material and one of the deepest rogues galleries around, there’s no shortage of possibilities as to what another sequel could bring and with any luck, we’ll see one materialize sooner rather than later.
