There’s bold, and then there’s continuing Sony’s Spider-Man Universe after Morbius bold.
Indeed, one may even be forgiven for forgetting about J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter, considering it was quietly pushed from January earlier this year to October, but as we enter the second quarter of 2023, now is as good a time as ever to reacquaint ourselves with what might as well just be Marvel’s Elseworlds equivalent.
With only Venom, its sequel, and Morbius to its name, the only thing the SSU really has going for it is its willingness to delve into more mature stories, and Kraven the Hunter won’t be any different in that department at least. In fact, according to Russell Crowe in an interview with CBR, the film is going to be far darker than we already think.
“I’ve talked to J.C. Chandor, the director, he’s really excited about what he’s got in front of him… Really excited about the way people will receive it. I think I can sort of pass on… One of the things he said, that it’s, it’s just an unexpectedly dark world.”
We’re used to the darkness of the SSU, of course, with the likes of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius in particular being able to stake a claim in the horror department (in more ways than one, unfortunately), so to assert the darkness of one’s film in a cinematic universe that’s already well-versed in it means we can probably expect one of the most harrowing comic book adaptations in recent history. We can only hope, however, that its darkness is also indicative of its quality this time around.
Kraven the Hunter will release to theaters on October 6.
