Reports coming in today tell us that Glee and more importantly Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy is the studio’s first choice to direct the upcoming Annie remake that will star Willow Smith. Sony is apparently trying to sign Murphy onto the project but it’s far from confirmed and still in the early stages.
Seems like Murphy is the man for musicals these days, with the film versions of both Wicked and The Rocky Horror Picture Show being offered to him, along with Annie. This is a particularly interesting project though, especially with Jay-Z doing the music and Will Smith producing. You can be sure it will be a big deal.
Murphy is certainly able to handle musicals, as he has proven with Glee, and while I don’t think Glee is as good as everyone says, I loved his previous show, Nip/Tuck. It’s still one of my favorite shows of all time. As for Annie though, I don’t have a problem with him doing the remake, I’m just not expecting great things from the film.
It’s designed to be a starring vehicle for Willow Smith. The last time Will produced a starring vehicle for one of his kids we got The Karate Kid, which was awful. So right now, I don’t have high hopes for this one.
