To be honest, I’m getting so fed up with Sam Mendes’ on-again/off-again relationship with Bond 24 that at this point, I think I’d rather just see someone else direct. I mean, one week the guy is saying he’ll do the project, then the next week he’s saying he may not. It’s time to make a decision Sam, we won’t wait forever.
Despite what we heard last month, which was that Mendes would indeed direct, the director has now said that he’s still unsure and hasn’t made a final decision yet.
Speaking with Hey U Guys at the premiere of his stage adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mendes said the following:
“In answer to the question you’re going to ask, I don’t know yet. I’m in discussion over the ‘B’ word and I won’t make any decision until [‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’] is open. It’s taken a long time to get this open and this has been my focus.”
Initially, the director had no intention of returning to direct, stating that the thought of returning for another Bond film made him physically ill. And so, the search began for a new director and quite a few appealing candidates were tossed around. But then Mendes said he’d return for not only Bond 24, but Bond 25 as well, and fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief.
Now though, everything is uncertain again and we’re left wondering who will direct. While I’m not exactly opposed to Mendes coming back, like I said, at this point I think I’d rather them just go with someone else. Sure, Skyfall was the most successful Bond film of all time but I’m sure that someone like Christopher Nolan or Nicolas Winding Refn could do just as good a job with Bond 24, don’t you think?
