We’ve known for a while that Ant-Man and the Wasp will bring about the return of Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp, after she’s been trapped in the Quantum Realm for decades. Despite featuring Michelle Pfeiffer’s former superhero on the posters for the sequel, though, the rest of the marketing has remained very quiet about what exactly her role is in the movie.
But thanks to a loose-lipped answer from Michael Douglas – who plays Janet’s estranged husband Hank Pym – we now have a hint as to how she’s rescued from the other dimension. Screen Rant spoke to the Hollywood legend during a set visit on Ant-Man 2 and asked about how Hope’s mother returns. Obviously, Douglas was careful about what he said – with a Disney exec even stepping in to warn him not to reveal too much – but he still let slip one juicy nugget of info.
Michael Douglas: Well, let me think now. We sort of — well we get a signal. No, really what happens and, and you — I expect Marvel to shoot with a blow gun in the back [LAUGHS] of the neck if I’ve said — No we get a signal actually through Scott. Um that —
Disney: The blow dart is coming Michael.
Michael Douglas: Okay, so there you go. So it’s an integral part, but we get a signal that she might still be alive.
So, it seems that Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang will prove key in rescuing Janet from the Quantum Realm, as he may receive a signal from her. This makes a lot of sense, as Hank and Hope only discovered she was alive when Scott traveled into the Quantum Realm at the end of Ant-Man. A very brief, blurry glimpse of Wasp could be seen during the sequence, so perhaps Janet detected him in the dimension and was able to send a signal to him once he was out.
Whatever happens to her in Ant-Man and the Wasp, it seems Janet will have a future beyond this one movie. Sebastian Stan has revealed that Michelle Pfeiffer (and Michael Douglas) will play a role in Avengers 4, meaning the first Wasp may work with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes come next May. And how exciting is that?
