Whether you’re a Scott aficionado or a genre fan, the news that Ridley Scott will be tackling sequels to the more-divisive-than-gin-soaked-cornflakes Prometheus and Blade Runner is call for celebration. Or is it? You’d be hard pushed to find anyone who likes Prometheus warts and all, and Blade Runner has had thirty years to ferment and justify its legacy in the minds of fans.
During an interview this week with UK paper, The Metro, Scott divulged bugger all about the Prometheus sequel:
“… You’ve got a person [Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw] with a head in a bag [Michael Fassbender as the android David] that functions and has an IQ of 350. It can explain to her how to put the head back on the body and she’s gonna think about that long and hard because, once the head is back on his body, he’s dangerous… They’re going off to paradise but it could be the most savage, horrible place. Who are the Engineers?”
It’s a response. But alas, it is one which at first encourages excitement (like drinking ten pints of lager) but afterwards you feel utter deflation at being scammed (like vomiting those ten pints all over your partner’s face.)
It looks like the sequel is going ahead but other than the fact that Shaw and David will be returning, there’s little else to go on. There’s the possibility Shaw won’t attempt to reattach David’s head and instead keep it affixed to her via a degrading dog leash or in pouch akin to one a kangaroo would keep a joey in. Come on, despite having keen hair care habits David was a massive git.
In other Scott news, the last year has witnessed more movement on the Blade Runner sequel than the bowel of a racehorse – it’ll have a female protagonist and the slight possibility of Harrison Ford returning. Recently, Scott had this to say on the film:
“[The ‘Blade Runner’ sequel is] happening. With Harrison Ford? I don’t know yet. Is he too old? Well, he was a Nexus-6 so we don’t know how long he can live [laughs]. And that’s all I’m going to say at this stage.”
Both Prometheus and Blade Runner allowed sufficient narrative space to extend into follow up features. So which project should Scott push forward next?
Prometheus has built a huge following, most of whom love to hate it for defecating on the most precious of cinematic mythologies. The momentum it has mounted warrants exploiting as that surely makes the most sense for the studio. The sequel to Blade Runner will no doubt unleash the same level of commentary and critique, but it can probably wait until after another visit to the Prometheus universe.
Which do you think Scott should helm next, a sequel to Prometheus or Blade Runner? And more importantly, what do you reckon to Harrison Ford back on the big screen as Decker?! Have your say in the comments below.
