The nominations for this year’s Screen Actors Guild awards have been released and there are a few key surprises. In the acting category, Demian Bichir took one of the Best Leading Actor nominations for A Better Life, beating out Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, Michael Shannon and Ryan Gosling.
Another key surprise comes in the Best Supporting Actor category with Armie Hammer securing a nomination for his role in J. Edgar, as did Jonah Hill for Moneyball. Unfortunately though, Andy Serkis and Albert Brookes missed out on nominations, which was a bit of a shock.
The female categories are pretty much as expected, with the usual favourites Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer getting nominated in the Best Leading and Best Supporting actress categories.
Incredible absences from the list include Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Hugo, War Horse, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Ides of March. It should also be noted that in 15 years, no film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without a SAG nomination.
That’s bad news for Hugo, which up until now, seemed to be the front runner, with Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and War Horse sitting close behind. This now leaves The Artist as a probable favourite, and something tells me it has been a lot longer than 15 years since a silent film won Best Picture at the Oscars.
Bridesmaids was perhaps the biggest surprise though, with the film scoring a nomination in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category, as well as a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Melissa McCarthy.
In the television category the major nominations were for Boardwalk Empire for Drama and Modern Family for Comedy, which of course, was to be expected.
