Buoyed by a worldwide haul of $429 million, Universal and Illumination Entertainment surprised exactly no one today by announcing plans for Sing 2.
It’ll open on December 25, 2020, and is one of three Universal animations to land a new release date – spoilers: the other two are Minions 2 and The Secret Life of Pets 2. The former has been brought forward one week to July 3, 2020, while The Secret Life of Pets 2 – which was initially pegged for launch in 2018 – has been bumped back almost a full year, all the way back to July 3, 2019.
Elsewhere on the slate, the Benedict Cumberbatch-led How the Grinch Stole Christmas will light up theaters on November 9, 2018. On paper, that seems to be a little early for a festive-themed animation, but Universal has no doubt sought inspiration from Garth Jennings’ Sing, which thrived in the early November corridor against strong competition (see: Doctor Strange, Hacksaw Ridge, Loving). Last and certainly not least, we also understand that Universal is teaming with the creative minds at Illumination for a new spin on The Cat in the Hat. No word yet on a release date or even window for that one.
So, there you have it; amid their reshuffling effort, Universal and Illumination Entertainment has handed out dates for Sing 2 (December 25, 2020), Minions 2 (July 3, 2020) and The Secret Life of Pets 2, with the latter poised to debut a little later than expected. Next up is the launch of Despicable Me 3 on June 30th of this year, and you can watch the frankly hilarious reveal trailer right here.
