Filming is now underway on the Hawaiian set of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island – and the first set photos have surfaced to prove it.
Unearthed by Reel Tours Hawaii, the images place the spotlight on the film’s tropical setting, where an early, pre-CG skull is cast astray on the terrain. While these stills are lacking the filmic magic that will no doubt transform the prop into a foreboding set piece, it’s still an interesting peak behind the curtain as production begins on the titular, primordial isle.
[zergpaid]With Jordan Vogt-Roberts behind the lens, Kong: Skull Island will be based on a script by John Gatiss and Godzilla scribe Max Borenstein. It’s understood that the creative team are angling the creature feature as an origins tale, with Tom Hiddleston’s intrepid explorer plotting course for the island in search of an elusive serum said to cure all form of illnesses.
In search of this elixir, Hiddleston’s protagonist will cross paths with all manner of beasts, with the famed and monstrous gorilla making an appearance at some point. Now that the cameras are rolling, here are your first batch of photos from the set.

Joining the actor for Vogt-Roberts’ monster mash are Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and Fantastic Four‘s Toby Kebbell.
Kong: Skull Island will sound the klaxon for a bone fide shared monster universe at Legendary – now that plans for a Godzilla and King Kong mash-up are now a lock – when Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ creature feature stomps into theaters on March 10, 2017.
