On the heels of our first look at Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys, today brings forth the stylish first trailer for Shane Black’s jet-black comedy, sending our title twosome onto the streets of 70s LA.
Pitched as something of a spiritual sequel to Black’s beloved breakout Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gosling and Crowe are on board to play struggling private eye Holland March and muscle for hire, Jackson Healy, respectively. That the entire red band sizzle reel runs through at a brisk clip is a testimony to Black’s writing, and already we’re beginning to see the sparks of a bona fide screen duo in Gosling and Crowe.
On the hunt for a missing porn star, The Nice Guys sees March and Healy set aside old differences for the crime caper, crossing paths with all manner of crooks, goons and conspiracies as they venture headfirst into the wacky side of the neon-drenched city. Slick and stylish, Black’s latest looks to embrace its setting with arms wide open, and the remainder of the cast list will be rounded out by Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley and Kim Basinger.
When sharing his experience with the filmmaker, Gosling touched base with some of Black’s stylistic tendencies and how he is, and we quote, a world unto himself.
“It’s Shane Black. He’s a world unto himself. His world is so fun and crazy. I had such a great time. Russell Crowe is so funny in the movie. I can’t wait for people to see that in the movie. It’s not a side of himself that he shows very often, but he’s hysterical. It is an R-rated film and it’s a caper…It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore.”
Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe will take up arms as The Nice Guys when Shane Black’s stylish noir makes its bow on May 20, 2016.
