Despite all signs pointing to the franchise bowing out after 2012’s forgettable Awakening, the vampires vs. werewolves saga rages on. Lakeshore Entertainment is poised to continue the cult horror series next year with the as-yet-untitled Underworld 5 – rumors suggest it may be branded as Next Generation – bringing back series stalwart Kate Beckinsale once again for the role of Selene.
She won’t be alone, however, with Divergent alum Theo James poised to star opposite the actress for Anna Foerster’s (Outlander) soft reboot along with, as of today, Sherlock and True Blood‘s Lara Pulver. An actress who is no stranger to the supernatural scene, Pulver is perhaps best known for her part as Claudine in HBO’s sexy horror series, while also appearing on Da Vinci’s Demons and the Tom Cruise-fronted actioner, Edge of Tomorrow.
[zerg]Plot, story elements and Pulver’s exact role are being kept behind closed doors for the time being, as Underworld 5 quietly marches toward its production start date of late-2015. Deadline reports that Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, and Richard S. Wright are all attached to produce the sequel for Lakeshore, while David Kern and franchise stalwart Len Wiseman are also involved. Underworld 5 will be scripted by The Last Witch Hunter‘s Corey Goodman.
Expanding the existing universe and its dark, supernatural mythology will take precedent for Goodman and Co., and though Underworld 5 won’t be releasing as an out-and-out reboot, the sequel does in many ways feel like a fresh start for the horror franchise.
Prague will play host to Underworld 5 later this year when Lakeshore Entertainment kick-starts production on the horror sequel. It’s due to continue the war between the Lycans and the vampires at some point in 2016.
