Shared universe may not be the hottest of hot trends of late in Hollywood, as studios come to realize the sheer scope and logistics of maintaining multiple story strands across numerous films, but that hasn’t stopped Simon Kinberg from dreaming up a nugget of an idea for 20th Century Fox’s own shared cinematic space – one which would unite X-Men, Deadpool and Gambit under the one umbrella.
Such a feat would involve resetting the timeline, according to Kinberg, who holds control over the Marvel properties at the studio. Mind you, any early progress on the crossover event looked to have been upended last month, when Kinberg himself noted that the world of Fantastic Four and Mutants are too distinct. Now, the writer appears to have found a workaround.
[zergpaid]During an interview with MTV, the writer-producer noted that the proposed shared universe would involve various cameos tying each project together, rather than one major showdown to rival the likes of Avengers or Warner’s Justice League.
“The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after Days of Future Past in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from X1, ’2, 3, everything from Days of Future Past forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon, so the Gambit movie, the Deadpool movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in Days of Future Past and moving forward.
Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules. There will be interplay between different characters in different movies.”
2016 marks a massive year for 20th Century Fox – shared universe or no – with both Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse primed to hit theaters on February 12 and May 26, respectively.
