Up until now, 20th Century Fox has been keeping quiet on their plans for the future of the X-Men franchise. Rumors have been hitting the web at a furious rate, all pointing to X-Men: Supernova being the next instalment, but so far, the studio hasn’t said a word.
That doesn’t change today, unfortunately, but Collider has an interesting report which tells us that producer Simon Kinberg, who basically runs the show when it comes to the mutant franchise, might get behind the camera to direct the upcoming outing, which is set to shoot this spring. We don’t know a whole lot about it just yet, but both Sophie Turner and James McAvoy are believed to be returning to reprise their roles, while it’s thought that “The Dark Phoenix Saga” will be used as inspiration for the story.
Though some may be a bit hesitant about giving a first time director a project as big as this, it’s important to note a few things. For one, Kinberg is heavily involved with almost all of Fox’s superhero properties and has written and produced a number of them. If there’s anyone who knows this particular cinematic universe inside and out, it’s him.
Furthermore, after the underwhelming response to X-Men: Apocalypse, getting some fresh blood behind the camera probably wouldn’t be the worst idea. Besides, Kinberg is very well respected in the industry and could be just the thing this franchise needs to get back on track. As Collider notes, this is far from a done deal and the studio could easily go in another direction, but if they do go with the X-Men mastermind, we’d certainly be all for it.
Tell us, do you want to see Simon Kinberg get behind the camera for X-Men: Supernova, or would you rather someone with more experience steer the ship? Let us know in the usual place!
