Solo: A Star Wars Story may have proved pretty divisive among some circles (72 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but critics unanimously agree on one thing: Donald Glover simply disappears into the role of Lando Calrissian.
He’s the smooth-talking smuggler of Cloud City, and the previous owner of the Millennium Falcon before he handed over the keys to Han Solo after a particularly unfortunate game of Sabacc. But Lando’s loss is Han’s gain, and sure enough, their relationship seemingly forms a big part of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
But what comes next? We know Lucasfilm is already developing Star Wars: Episode IX and a spinoff for Obi-Wan, but according to studio boss Kathleen Kennedy, it’s really only a matter of time before Lando: A Star Wars Story (tentative title) blasts off into hyperspace.
“We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian. Of course, there are still many stories to tell about Han and Chewbacca, but Lando will be next.”
Those comments were made to French publication Premiere (h/t Cinema Blend), and may read a little off due to translation. Nevertheless, it’s nigh on certain that Lucasfilm and Donald Glover will reunite in the not-so-distant future, as limiting his Star Wars tenure to only one movie would be a huge waste of talent.
Closer to home, Lucasfilm and Ron Howard will unveil Solo: A Star Wars Story to the world on May 25th. And while the director is adamant that there are so many stories left to tell, it appears the Powers That Be have already earmarked a Lando movie to be the next Anthology film. You know, after the one dedicated to Obi-Wan Kenobi…
